About Us
M3 guitars is a part of the Mountain Heartwood woodworking company. We have over 40 years of experience in woodworking, and more importantly, in customer satisfaction.
M3 guitars is a custom shop. A customer may pick an instrument from inventory or order one to their own specifications. Table saws, planers, sanders, etc., are used but the vast majority of work done on each instrument is done by hand. This is how we can offer completely custom work and your complete satisfaction. There are no computer controlled machines, no kits or pre-fabricated assemblies (Except the pick-ups -- we think that Lollar, Fishman, Seymour-Duncan and the others do a great job of making pickups).
Mass production of a few models belongs to other guitar manufacturers. What you find at M3 guitars is close cooperation so that you get exactly what you want.

Pricing
Our Prices
The pricing is “cost plus”. It includes the entire guitar and all of the Standard features above. Because of the tremendous variety of pickups and bridges/tailpieces, the prices listed do not include the cost of those hardware pieces.
Some hardware will involve a charge in addition to the cost of the hardware. For example, a bridge with a tremolo bar requires additional machining.
In all cases, you will be given a complete estimate once all the details of your guitar have been worked out.
- Solid body $500
- Semi-hollow $600
- Hollow body $700

F.A.Q
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How does this all work?
You can order a completely custom guitar, one from our inventory, or order one from inventory modified to your specs.
If you already know what you want, just call.
If it seems a little complicated, or if you’re not sure, use the “Build Me a Guitar” option, then call us and we’ll talk about it.
In any case, we’ll discuss all the details with you before starting anything. -
How long does it take?
Total time from placing an order to delivery can vary from two to four months. The biggest variable is the finishing and curing of the top coats. For example, a painted finish (as Maui or Shelob in the Catalogue) only takes a week or two after building is completed. A polished lacquer finish (such as Alicante Red or Eddy in the Catalogue) takes about 2 months longer. Most of that time is waiting for the lacquer to "cure" so it can be polished.
Other things can affect how long it takes, such as availability of materials and hardware, type of wood being used, and any special requests you may have. Semi-hollow bodies take a little longer to build than solid bodies.
After we have discussed the details of what you want on your guitar, you'll get an estimated completion day. We will keep you updated on any changes and why there is a change. -
Can I have anything I want?
Yes, you can specify everything from string spread width at the nut to the shape, color and finish of the body. You can pick whatever wood and hardware you want. You can also order custom wiring, unique neck inlay, scale length, etc. Just ask.
There are some limitations, such as good design considerations. For example, necks can be made to whatever profile you like, but there is a limit on how thin it can be, just from a strength standpoint.
You can choose the type of woods, BUT -- we will NOT use any wood on the endangered species or restricted import lists. -
How about duplicating other companies’ models?
There are two reasons we don’t do this. One is copyright/patent laws.
The other reason is that it’s not in the customer’s best interest. Asking for a duplicate of a model made by another company is a little like buying every individual piece of metal, plastic and glass for a new car separately and asking a mechanic to build a car just like a new one already on the lot. It just doesn’t make sense. -
What pickups are used? Can I get different ones?
You can choose any model of pickup you want, as well as the configuration such as 3 single poles, (Strat type), 2 humbuckers, 2 single poles and 1 humbucker, etc. Most of the major manufacturers have a pickup selection guide on their website.
